WCU Tournament of Bands

Posted on

I had a good weekend up in Cullowhee, NC for the Western carolina band competition.  It was a long couple of days.  I started Thursday morning with a DR. appointment (more on that at another time) then went to North Lincoln for band rehearsal.  I took the band outside during 4th period and spent almost the entire time fixing the 3rd movement time and music issues.  A great rehearsal Thursday evening showed a new NLHS band, and one that was taking this thing seriously.  After a good rehearsal and another on Friday, we got up early on Saturday for the long day at WCU.

The band did OK in prelims and even better in finals that night.  So much progress was made in one week.  There were so many good bands at this show, it was fortunate we even made it to finals.  A lot of happy kids.  They earned it for sure.  Green Hope was there and they  were really good.  I saw Harrison HS, Boiling Springs, Ola, White Knoll and Nations Ford, and all were really good.  To top it off, WCU’s marching band, all 410 of them, smoked it on the field.  They were awesome, and very loud.  Bagpipe solo starts the show, played by Cedar Ridge’s Ezra that I worked with on tuba up there.  He is also playing in the sousa section.  It was good to see former students like Dana, and Rachel R.

After a long bus ride to North, I drove home to Cary arriving at around 4 AM.  I slept and watched football on Sunday, including the redskins, who are almost playing well enough to pay attention to now.

The ole iPhone came in handy as I recorded some shows on the video camera.  You can see Green Hope, BOK and WCU on my youtube page.  Here is a short video of North Lincoln warming up.  This is the ending of our show:
